Frequently Asked Questions:
Why become a member?
Regardless of your membership status, you are welcome at St. Paul’s! However, becoming a member indicates that you intend to be part of the congregation in a deeper way; it is an outward commitment that you and your family make to this parish.
Who is a member of the Episcopal Church?
A person is a member of the Episcopal Church if they have been baptized, either in an Episcopal Church or another church, and the baptism has been recorded with a particular Episcopal parish. A person is also a member of the Episcopal Church if they are confirmed or received by a bishop.
What is baptism?
Baptism is a Sacrament of the Episcopal Church. Anyone, from infants to adults, can be baptized. We recognize any baptism administered in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. If you have not been baptized and wish to be, please speak with the rector.
What is confirmation?

Confirmation is an informed profession of faith that may be made by teenagers or adults. All members baptized as infants are encouraged to affirm their faith as adults through confirmation by the Bishop. If you have made an adult profession of faith in another Christian denomination, you may be received into The Episcopal Church by the Bishop.

Those baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church who wish to recommit themselves to the life of faith may choose to reaffirm their baptismal covenant with the Bishop.

An Inquirer’s Class is held to prepare candidates for confirmation, reception, and reaffirmation, and confirmation is held at the cathedral several times per year.

Do I need to be confirmed to be a member?
Not necessarily. To be a member in good standing, you must be confirmed, attend regularly, and give to the church. But anyone is welcome to attend, receive communion, and participate in activities and programs, regardless of whether you have been confirmed.
What is a letter of transfer?
If you were a member of another Episcopal parish prior to coming to St. Paul’s, let us know by filling out the membership form above. We will contact your prior parish to transfer your membership to St. Paul’s.
What about pledging?
St. Paul believes in year-round, continuous identification of the gifts we receive from God and our prayerful response through giving back. While pledging is not a requirement for membership, we see the pledge as a sacramental way to give ourselves to God through the church. Each fall, we express gratitude for our blessings, identify ongoing needs, and ask members to make pledges to help us plan for the future. Those joining the congregation may make a pledge at any time by filling out the online pledge form: https://onrealm.org/stpaulsnewnan/-/form/pledge/2025pledgecampaign.
